How are your tiles made?

Each tile is a hand-made, multi-step work of art. After Dani designs and finalizes the artwork for every individual tile, the set moves into sampling, then revisions are made to ensure each tile depicts the vision. With Dani's OCD and need for perfection, sampling often takes many rounds. Once a final sample is approved, the tiles go into production.

Each tile is engraved by hand. Then the engraving is hand-painted in custom paints, often up to eight different colors per set, which is the step that takes the longest because of the level of detail involved. After painting, the tiles cure for up to three weeks before being prepared for packaging.

Why do you estimate delivery dates?

Every Mise en Mahjong tile is handmade, and handmade work moves at the pace of the work, not the calendar. We give you an estimated window rather than a precise ship date because the alternative is a promise we cannot honestly keep.

Quality holds the schedule. We perform checks at every phase of the five-step process. If a color reads off at any stage, we pause and correct rather than ship something we would not be proud of.

The mill is not the only variable. Our artisans observe several lengthy holidays each year, which can pause production for two to four weeks. Weather, customs, and the realities of an international supply chain all factor in.

Demand has reshaped the schedule. With more and more Mahjong product companies entering the market, production timelines across the industry have lengthened tremendously. We will not cut a corner to catch up, but we do have a team on the ground working hard to maintain efficiency and quality.

Will you ever sell items once they are in stock, or only via pre-order?

With a background in real estate development, the home owner that purchases pre-construction from renderings always gets the best value. If executed correctly, the price always goes up once there is a proof of concept. The same holds true for our products. The earlier you buy, the best value you'll receive in exchange for taking on the risk of waiting time. If we hold inventory, we take on the risk, and the prices will rise.

Further, since each collection is a very limited edition quantity, production is capped on purpose, and our collections regularly sell through before production is finished. Pre-order is how we make sure the people who really want and value our sets can claim one.

Aside from Collection One, we will not open pre-orders until production has officially begun and the final costs and a reasonable understanding of the timeline are known. That way the price you see is the price you pay, and the window you see is the window we have committed to.

Once the edition is claimed, it is closed. Past collections are not reproduced in the same form.

Why hand-engraved and hand-painted instead of machine cut and UV-printed?

Because the difference is visible, and it's a work of art. It was important to Dani that each tile honored the traditional process of engraving and hand-painting, and that the tiles didn't feel machine made. The artistic imperfections are the difference between buying an original painting versus a piece of mass-produced decorator's artwork.

Engraving each tile by hand and filling it with custom oil paint protects the design for the life of the set. The artwork sits inside the tile rather than on top of it. Each tile reads as a small piece of original work, with subtle variation from one to the next, the way anything made by hand does.

UV printing is faster and less expensive, and it can render detail well. We have chosen not to use it. Printed work sits on the surface, the long-term durability is not yet proven, and it does not have the dimensional quality of paint set into engraving.

We do love layered tiles and several collections will feature such. There is the potential for delamination or splitting of layers. We guarantee our products and will get you a replacement tile quickly should that occur.

Where is my order, and how do I find shipping information?

Two answers in one place.

The current production status and estimated delivery window for your collection live on the product page for that collection. Your order confirmation email has your specific fulfillment timing.

When your set ships, you will receive a tracking number by email. Between now and then, the best places to follow along are the product page on our site and our updates on Instagram @miseenmahjong.

Do you offer an affiliate program?

Yes, however, our affiliate program is currently by invitation only. For inquiries or to learn more, write to us at hello@miseenmahjong.com with subject “Affiliate”.

What happens to a collection after it sells out?

It moves to the Vault, a permanent record of every collection we have made. Each closed collection lives there with its imagery, story, and the note that it is no longer available.

Once an edition is claimed, it is not reproduced in its original form. In order to provide quick replacements should any issues or defects arise, we order more quantities than we commit to selling. These sets will move into our physical Vault, to be preserved and available if and when replacements are needed.

If a tile defect occurs after excessive use, or you accidentally lose a tile, replacement tiles will be available for purchase.

We may revisit tile characters in a reimagined version, a different tile body, a new palette, an additional motif, but we will never make the same set available twice.
